Spring weather steals three games
After their week long line of games in Florida, with seven wins and three losses to start the season, the Delta Pioneers baseball team returned home to have their first three games canceled due to weather conditions.
Games scheduled with Cornerstone College and Rochester College have been canceled, while competitions with Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Lansing Community College have been rescheduled.
Since the Pioneers have been home, they have played two double-headers at both Kellogg Community College on Sunday, Apr. 6 and Macomb Community College on Apr. 9. In their opening home double-header at Kellogg Community College, the Pioneers lost 3-2, and 9-8. However, given the circumstances with weather and lack of gameplay, Coach Dan Smith explained how their only slightly failed efforts on Sunday’s game were nothing to be ashamed of.
“When you get back and essentially take 26 days without playing, there’s going to be some rust,” he said. “We went from being a team that played every single day down in Florida to a team that took the equivalent of a month off. Considering that we played with Kellogg Community College, a defending league champion and they’re consistently ranked in the top 15 in the country, we walked away from that double-header with a positive attitude.”
Since their first home games with Kellogg, the Pioneers baseball team has also faced off in another double-header with Macomb Community College on Apr. 9, The team leaving Macomb with two wins, 6-3 and 4-3. Their overall score in the season is 9-5. They continue to push forward with the season, preparing for the games to come.
“We need to remain consistent,” Smith explained. “Consistency is something we preach and moving forward, we have to continue to be consistent and I have no doubt that we will.”
The team anticipates competition from Grand Rapids, Lake Michigan, Mott and others in the weeks to come.
