Men's basketball season ends, 79-61
The men's basketball season wrapped up March 6 at Pioneer Gym with a 79-61 loss to Wayne County in the District 10 semifinal.
While Delta Head Coach, Lonnie Griffin, is disappointed the Pioneers aren't moving on in the tournament, he is pleased with the season his team had and felt they were improving as the season progressed.
“It was a good year. I thought it was productive,” Griffin said. “We grew the whole year and we were a better team at the end than we were at the beginning. I think that's the goal of every season for us to have our kids improve as players.”
Griffin is already looking to have a new crop of players coming in for next season.
“We had six sophomores, which is the largest group we have ever had come through here in my four years here,” he said. “I told them [the sophomores] that they left this program better than they found it. For the freshman it is time to go back to work. It's a year-round thing.”
Delta has five players returning and 8 spots to fill before next season begins.
Wayne Head Coach, Rogeric Turner, liked the effort his team gave, especially on defense.
“We played some solid defense. I liked the way we rotated on the defensive end,” Turner said. “What we tried to do is pick up the tempo with them. They are a bigger team than we are, so we try rely on speed. It pretty much worked for us tonight.”
Delta finished the 2013-14 season with a record of 14-17.
